I've mentioned this before, and I'll say it again; you'll have more success if you combine these.

For example, I regularly cycle 20 miles through the worst weather the UK has to offer in order to go to my class, equal parts because I love the activity, and partly because I want to see my friends.

The gym is great, but classes there tend to be factories, and if you go by yourself you need to know what you're doing to get the best out of it, and crucially you need to enjoy going to the gym - even I'm not terribly keen on them, it's a means to an end.

Look at classes/activities you wouldn't think of - climbing, dance, martial arts etc.... try a few classes before you write them off!
